Social Media Management: Agency, Freelancer, or In-House?

3TR Media · October 1, 2026

At some point every business asks the same question: who should be running our social media? The options are an agency, a freelancer, or someone in-house, and each one works well in the right situation.

Here’s an honest comparison.

Doing it yourself or in-house

Best for: very small businesses with a clear voice and some time to spare.

Pros: you know your business better than anyone, and it costs only time. Authenticity is hard to fake.

Cons: time is the real cost. Doing it yourself means hours on content with no system and no way to know whether it’s driving business. It’s the first thing dropped when work gets busy. And someone who’s good at your trade isn’t necessarily good at making content.

A freelancer

Best for: businesses that already know their strategy and need reliable execution.

Pros: more affordable than a full agency, and often very good at a specific skill, like editing or posting.

Cons: a freelancer executes what they’re told. If nobody is setting strategy, you get posts without direction. Coverage is also limited: one person is on vacation, sick, or overbooked, and the work stops. And they rarely handle ads, analytics, or content production.

An agency

Best for: businesses that want strategy, production, publishing, and measurement handled together.

Pros: an agency builds the strategy behind what’s posted, manages the whole production pipeline, handles engagement, tracks what’s driving leads, and adjusts. A freelancer fills a content gap; an agency builds a system that grows the business and measures the result.

Cons: it costs more than the other options, and quality varies a lot. Some agencies are really one person with a team’s name, so ask who does the work.

How to decide

Ask yourself:

  1. Do we have a strategy? If not, you need strategy before execution, which points to an agency.
  2. Do we have content to post? Social media needs a steady supply. If you don’t, you need production help, like a regular shoot day.
  3. Can we measure results? If you can’t tell what social is doing for the business, fix that first.
  4. How much time can we actually spend? Be honest.

Be ready first

Many businesses aren’t ready for social media yet: their offer is unclear, their website doesn’t convert, or they have no way to follow up with leads. In that case, posting more won’t help. We wrote about that in why your business isn’t ready for social media.

Our approach

At 3TR, social media sits alongside video and web design. We build a plan, produce the content, publish it, and run Meta and Google ads when it makes sense, with direct-response content to fund the business today and brand-building content to keep it the obvious choice tomorrow.

Bottom line: do it yourself if you have time and a voice, hire a freelancer if you have strategy and need hands, and hire an agency if you want the whole system. If you’re not sure which you are, book a free call and we’ll tell you honestly, even if the answer isn’t us.
