What Does a Content Marketer Actually Do?

3TR Media · September 1, 2026

Here’s the honest test for whether you need a content marketer: can you capture your own product or service well, without it eating into time you’d otherwise spend making money?

If the answer is yes, keep doing it yourself. There’s no rule that says a business owner can’t shoot their own content. But if you’re busy running the company, showing up to jobs, answering calls, actually doing the work that makes money, and content keeps getting pushed to “whenever I have a free hour,” that’s the real signal. That’s when a content marketer earns their cost.

The job is cutting through the learning curve for you

A content marketer’s real value isn’t that they own better equipment than you could buy. It’s that they’ve already climbed the learning curve of showing a product or service professionally, across a website, social media, and paid advertising, so you don’t have to spend the next two years figuring it out yourself while your business waits.

That’s the actual trade being made. You’re not paying for a camera. You’re buying back the hours you’d otherwise spend learning lighting, editing, platform formatting, and posting schedules on top of an already full day running your business.

Strategy, production, and distribution under one roof

The reason “content marketer” gets used instead of “videographer” or “social media manager” is that the job spans all three. A content marketer plans what needs to be made, produces it, and figures out where it should live and how it should be cut for each platform. Splitting that across three different vendors usually means nobody owns the actual outcome, and it usually ends up costing you more of your own time coordinating between them than it would have taken to just hire one person for the whole thing.

Consistency beats occasional brilliance

One incredible video posted once does less for a business than a steady stream of decent content posted consistently. Audiences and algorithms both reward consistency. A content marketer’s job includes building a system that doesn’t depend on someone remembering to post this week, not just producing one great piece and hoping it works.

A real, head-to-head example

This isn’t theoretical. The Art Room paused work with us and hired a different content creator to run their videos instead, same client, same platform, same audience. One of our videos for them is nearing 50,000 views. Several of the other creator’s videos, over the same stretch, are barely reaching 2,000 views each. The comments tell the real story too: ours draw people asking how to sign up, theirs draw emoji reactions. Full breakdown in the The Art Room case study.

How this plays out at 3TR

Our content marketers in Provo and Orem work across video, social, and web because those three pieces reinforce each other. A video shot for a homepage gets cut into social content. A case study becomes a testimonial clip. Nothing gets made once and thrown away. It’s the foundation of both our video content marketing and social media marketing work.

If you’re weighing whether your business needs a content marketer, the real question isn’t whether you’re capable of doing it yourself. It’s whether doing it yourself is actually the best use of the time you have.
